Government has announced that completion of the current National Highway Authority (NHA) projects, particularly under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), will take precedence over other projects. According to an official in Islamabad, out of a total budget of PKR 156 billion, PKR 118 billion has been reserved for timely completion of Sukkur-Multan Motorway, Halka-DI Khan Motorway and various other projects. These projects are crucial in the development and up-gradation of infrastructure in the country, which will provide necessary boost to Pakistan’s economy.

An official in Islamabad said that out of a total allocation of PKR 156 billion for NHA's road infrastructure programme, PKR 118 billion has been earmarked for the ongoing road infrastructure projects.

He said that PKR 24 billion has been allocated for the 118 km Havelian-Thakot section of Hazara Motorway, scheduled to be completed by end of next year.

For Sukkur-Multan Motorway, also part of CPEC, PKR 19 billion has been earmarked, to ensure its timely completion.

For the Halka-D I Khan Motorway, he said, PKR 13 billion has been allocated and PKR 1.5 billion has been earmarked for land acquisition, affected properties and relocation of utilities for construction of approach roads of the project.

He said that PKR 8.5 billion has been allocated under PSDP for reconstruction and rehabilitation of five roads affected by heavy floods of 2010.

The sources said that PKR 5 billion has been set aside for construction of 184 km Faisalabad-Khanewal section of the Motorway, whereas PKR 4.5 billion hs been allocated for completion of remaining works of Lahore- Abdul Hakeem Motorway.

The official said that PKR 3.5 billion has been earmarked for improvement and widening of Jaglot-Skardu Road, and a similar amount has been allocated for land acquisition of Sukkur- Hyderabad Motorway.

Finally, he said that PKR 2 billion has been allocated for the construction of 106 km Basima- Khuzdar highway.
