Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed is the founder/Chairman of the Pakistan-China Institute, and Chairman of the Senate Defence Committee. He served in the Federal cabinet as Minister of Information and Culture from 1997 to 1999.
Senator Mushahid has served as leader of Pakistan’s delegation to the UN Human Rights Commission at Geneva in 1993, and chairman of the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Central Asia in 1992-93. He was Pakistan’s Representative to the 15-member Commission of Eminent Persons created to reform and restructure the Organisation of Islamic Countries, and was Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly 2013 and 2014. He also hosted the World Islamic Forum in 2015 in Islamabad.
Senator Mushahid holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the Forman Christian College in Lahore, and a Master of Science in Foreign Service from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. At age 29, he became the youngest Editor of The Muslim, an English newspaper respected for its independence during the martial law years. Earlier, he served on the Faculty of the prestigious Pakistan Administrative Staff College, the premier civil service training institution, where he guided training of fresh foreign service officers.
Senator Mushahid has played a pivotal role in promoting peace and understanding with Pakistan’s neighbours and regional countries. In April 1984, as Editor of The Muslim, he organized the first Track-II Pakistan-India dialogue. He also organized the first Pakistan-Afghanistan parliamentary dialogue as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 2006. In addition, he is the architect of the first Think Tanks trilateral Dialogue between Pakistan, Afghanistan and China, convened in Beijing (August 2013) and Islamabad (October 2014 and January 2016).
In April 2015, Senator Mushahid Hussain was presented the ‘Five Principles of Peaceful Co-Existence Friendship Award’ by H.E. President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China during his state visit to Pakistan. In September 2015, Senator Mushahid was elected Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
